River, Open Space & Trails

The common thread to the Sahuarita Farms Land/River Master Plan is the Santa Cruz River. The River Master Plan is intended to preserve the existing river bottom and increase its width to protect properties from flooding while providing opportunities for natural and recreational enhancements throughout the corridor. Gently sloped river embankments will be vegetated with traditional native tree and plant species, and public trails and bike paths will be built to connect parks, neighborhoods and activity centers within the community.  The Santa Cruz River Master Plan will also include opportunities to create wetland habitat and replenish the local aquifer through recharge basins using treated effluent and other renewable water supplies.

The Sahuarita Farms Open Space & Trails Master Plan contains approximately 1,400 acres of open space  in the river corridor and throughout the community, which comprises 25% of the total project area.  Our goal is to provide a park or open space within 1/4 mile of every home in the community.

These open spaces include many miles of trails weaving throughout the project, community, district, neighborhood and pocket parks, and the  Santa Cruz River Park, a linear greenway lined with biking and walking trails that would always be accessible to the public.

The green areas on the map show the conceptual locations of trails, open space corridors, and community, regional, neighborhood and poket parks.
